The Atchafalaya Incident

On a late summer evening, riding across southern Louisiana on interstate 10, I saw a meteor streak across the sky from the back seat window of my parent’s AMC Rambler! I was maybe 8 . . . it happened so fast! I was the only one in the car to see it. I remember it as such a spectacular event! My father seemed less impressed. He claimed it was not uncommon to see meteors in the sky when you were away from the glare of city lights. According to my dad, “something really amazing” was finding a meteorite when he was a teen. (More amazing, to me, was that he had no idea what ever happened to it!) That glowing rock from space filled my imagination. I asked my dad if he thought anyone would find it but he said said the Atchafalaya swamp was so large there were parts of it that no one had yet explored. “WOW!” I thought. “What a perfect place to land a spacecraft!”
